Fisherman’s Friend: Your go-to throat remedy this holiday season

ffo2 (1)

The ‘Ber’ months are officially here! Together with the flood of Christmas carols and holiday shopping that will start to pick up pace around us, there’s another thing we Filipinos should prepare for: the cold and flu season.

According to the DOH, the cold season brings with it dangers of having a runny nose, fever, cough, and sore throat. These symptoms, which affect both young and old, are brought by the dropping of temperature which peaks during the holiday season.

All Filipinos love a good celebration, so of course, these symptoms should be watched out for– better yet, prevented–before they even dampen our holiday spirits. Surely, the last thing you want to have during the party season is a throat discomfort that can pull the stops on your cheery vibe.

Preparedness is key

This holiday season, make sure to take steps to avoid common illnesses that can ruin it. One way to do it is to prevent over-exposure to cold, which means it’s time to break out and dust off your favorite sweaters and coats. It’s also important to avoid encounters where you can pick up viruses, like crowded spaces and public areas. Use a face mask to keep yourself safe in the event that people sneeze and cough, too.

In the event that you do feel the onset of a throat discomfort, you should have a go-to source of relief to help. A good option is Fisherman’s Friend, the tried and tested throat lozenges which can provide instant relief to throat troubles.

A day in the life of Queen P

Binibini BTS 03

Miss Universe 2015 Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach is as famous for being an all-around beauty queen as she is for being a workaholic celebrity. She wrestles with a full calendar on most days even after her reign from the most prestigious beauty pageant.

“I usually go to work in the morning. And I work all day — doing photo shoots and shooting for the movie. That’s what’s keeping me busy,” said Wurtzbach in an interview. “I am lucky because I get to go home by dinner time or just after dinner. So, I haven’t been up really late so far. But then that’s also good because it gives me some time to spend with my family here at home.”

The Filipino-German beauty said that she spends time with her niece Lara after a tiring day.

“I come home and then I gather my thoughts again. I spend time with my niece Lara. Cuddling moments muna kami. We will eat together. If she is still awake, we play together. If I have a day off, I go swimming. I can’t really swim but I love the feeling of being in the water. I like to stretch like it’s a nice form of exercise. I also love cardio training, boxing,” she added.

Wurtzbach has started shooting her comeback movie entitled “The Revengers” with ace comedian Vice Ganda and Kapamilya heartthrob Daniel Padilla in the action-comedy film. It’s also her first time to join the Metro Manila Film Festival.

“It’s very good. We would get along a lot, pretty well. We joke around while waiting for our take. We have a good working relationship,” she said. “Right now I’m doing a dream role, a hero. I like it because it’s challenging. I trained for this. It’s difficult but I can do it.”

With her schedule, Wurtzbach said that she is still hopeful she could attend the finals of the 2017 Miss Universe beauty pageant in Las Vegas on Nov. 26.

“I’m planning it with Miss Universe right now. I hope my schedule will allow it. We have to do the promo for the movie but I think they will allow me even for five days lang just to attend and then come back,” she said.

Wurtzbach shared that with her busy schedule, she still enjoys simple activities such as reading and watching TV. “I bring reading materials with me to work. And I also bring Netflix with so that I can watch my favorite TV series while on my way to work or while I am waiting for my turn.”

Of the television series, Wurtzbach said: “I really love ‘Narcos’. I just finished Season 3. I’m sad because there is still no Season 4. So I’m moving on to a new series. I got suggestions from other people and they say maybe I should start with ‘Game of Thrones’ because I have actually not seen ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘Vikings’ is also another suggestion. So I’ll choose. I’ll watch the pilot episodes of both shows and I’ll see which one I like.”

Social media and video games have also become part of Wurtzbach’s life.

“Right now here at home we have ‘Just Dance.’ I like it because it’s fun and it’s like exercise. I have on my phone ‘Mobile Legends’ and word games usually. I am a very good support for ‘Mobile Legends.’ I have a favorite character. People usually do not choose to be the support character but I like doing that because I am a key player in the game. I think I’m pretty good at that.”

Asked about who she plays with, the beauty queen said: “I play with strangers. My account actually has my face on it with the crown pa and it’s funny. And then my handle is Queen P. They don’t ask. They probably think I’m just a fan. I also spend for the characters also like I buy the new costumes. I am a little maarte with that. I also have online friends, but they don’t know who I am. Walang usap usap. We just play.”

Wurtzbach, indeed, is one of the most followed Filipino celebrities these days with five million followers on Instagram.

“For me it’s not 5M, it’s only five. I don’t try to think that there are five million people watching. You will get conscious of what you’re posting. You’ll get mixed reactions. When I post something it’s to share, and most of the time it’s really just for me.”

“I try to update it every day. If I’m really having a long day and tired, I just don’t go online just for the sake of updating. I don’t really force myself to smile in front of the camera and just to share something with other people. If I’m not feeling well or if I’m not in the mood, I’m not gonna post. So everything I post is like real, totoo. If I’m happy in my post I’m really happy. I’m not into show-face. So I do try to post everyday if I’m not tired,” she said.

With many things goingon in her life now, Wurtzbach also boosts her energy with – chocolates. By now people already know that the country’s third Miss Universe from the Philippines has a sweet tooth in real life.

“I have a sweet tooth but most of the time I eat in the house. It’s one of my guilty pleasures and a reward like if I did a good job or if I need a boost of energy – chocolate, chocolate, chocolate,” said Wurtzbach

But did you know that Wurtzbach was eating sweets even during the finals of 2015 Miss Universe while waiting for the question-and-answer portion of the pageant?

“During Miss Universe also, that’s what I did. When I’m feeling low, I eat sweets and them I’m up. During Miss Universe backstage, I was eating sweets because I won’t be able to answer the questions if I were hungry. There’s glow after you eat something. And you’re happy! The other girls don’t want to eat. I told them they will not look at your body anymore, they will listen to your answers.”

Wurtzbach revealed that she loves Goya products even if she has already tasted a lot of international brands.

“Goya chocolates are really good. I don’t understand why there’s doubt even if I have tasted many international brands of chocolates. Goya knows the taste of Filipinos when it comes to chocolates,” she said.

“It brings me back to my childhood days, it brings me back to my Binibini days. During Binibining Pilipinas, my favorite Goya product is Cookies and Cream. It’s really my favorite. At dawn I would even go to a nearby convenience store to buy Goya’s Cookies and Cream. Then I would go back to my room and eat the chocolates there.”

Wurtzbach’s love affair with Goya products started when she tasted the regular Goya Milk Chocolate. “When I first tasted it, I got the Goya Milk Chocolate the one with the nuts and Cookies and Cream. Before, I’ve always thought the dark chocolate is always bitter. I avoided dark chocolates. When I tasted Goya’s dark chocolate, it’s not bitter. And dark chocolate is really good for you. It’s the only chocolate approved by my gym trainer.”

Popular entertainment blogger Perez Hilton also loves Goya chocolates, said Wurtzbach. “I got a message from Perez Hilton and he told me that he wants to try Goya products. So we sent him Goya chocolates and he loved it. He invited me to hang out with him if I will visit LA in the future. My sister also brings with her Goya products to London where she is based.”

It’s not the marketing strategy or the name of the brand that would make her appreciate the product, according to Wurtzbach. “I’ve had a lot of choices. I don’t think it’s about the price tag. Not for me. What’s important is what will make you happy.”

UnConference: A Storm of Ideas (from “A Storm of Swords”)

An unconference is the perfect storm of ideas, opinions, thoughts, and views all coming together at once in one concentrated place like a tornado.
Unconferences originated in Philadelphia in 2010, and recently gained serious momentum around the globe. The informal nature of unconferences create an environment that empowers attendees to explore their passion, by giving them a voice, and giving them control. Attendees nominate topics to be discussed, a committee will group together similar topics and then assign final topics to be discussed into each breakout session. Attendees are not tied to stay in just one session. Everyone is encouraged to move on to another breakout session of their choice at any time. This participant-driven structure makes unconferences so noteworthy — simply the kind of event you can’t miss.

Poster Program Day1

The event lives and dies by the participation of its attendees. The breakout sessions at an unconference have no agenda until attendees create it. The range of topics is diverse; problems or issues to discuss, possible alliances, relationship building, or an attack plan. Attendees will together discover unexpected topics that are of great interest and importance.

Poster Program Day2

The speakers line up for the Game of Marketing UnConference aims to inspire attendees and equip them to unleash innovative ideas for the breakout sessions on day 2. This open-space tenet of learning incorporated in this year’s conference organized by the Philippine Marketing Association, the same team that created Fifty Shades of Marketing is bound to reward the curiosity of its attendees, and promises an exciting, flexible, and engaging experience.

Connect with similar minds at this forum of ideas at this year’s conference. “Game of Marketing”, the 1st Asian Marketing UnConference will be held on November 27 & 28 at the Sofitel Philippine Plaza, CCP Complex, Roxas Blvd Brgy. 76, Pasay City.

Marriott Opens its Manila Life Café at NAIA Terminal 3

One of the most popular travel tips, especially in Manila, is to be at the airport 3 to 4 hours before your actual flight. So with a couple more hours of waiting, what do you do while passing time? You eat it out! And, you should wish that your departure is from Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 because it has a new exciting flavor for a worthwhile stopover.

Expect Filipino cuisine favorites by a 5-star kitchen with unparalleled service

Marriott Hotel Manila brings its exceptional culinary expertise across the street with Manila Life Café, a casual dining outlet serving a new take on Filipino cuisine and more. This 94-seater café is open daily starting October 14. As their General Manager Bruce Winton describes their unceasing expansion, “We are proud to be the first hotel to put up a dining outlet in the airport in our pursuit to innovate the way people travel.”

Manila Life features relaxed, modern interiors highlighting Manila street scenes as wall murals and hip furniture for intimate or group dining.

Manila Life is located at the 4th floor of the NAIA Terminal 3 and at the tail-end of the newly built Runway Manila. The modern pedestrian, Runway Manila, directly connects the airport and Newport City Complex creating a seamless, more convenient and pleasant transit experience in the area. The gray bricked walls with Manila Life Café stamp is hard not to notice. While it’s bright lit, spacious and cozy interiors will just invite you in. Hip furniture and ceiling accents mix well with the Manila street portraitures on the walls. Instagram-worthy as they say, that with or without a flight, sumptuous bowl of their Pancit Luglug is a reason to visit the airport.

“Think about the best comfort food in any Filipino home, but done in a 5-star hotel kitchen, that’s Manila Life. And getting the best version of your home flavors,” says Executive Chef Meik Brammer on their most affordable menu yet. Top of the menu is the All-Day Almusal (breakfast) option that includes “Tapdelog”, tapa and egg stuffed in a pan de sal, and Manila Sunrise Plate that combines homemade pork longanisa, tocino and eggs over garlic rice. For snacks to share, there is the Manila Street Food Platter, a fancy take on the “tusok-tusok” street food that includes homemade fish balls, chicken fritters and quail eggs.

Western comfort foods such as tacos and burgers get a Filipino twist to cater to both local and foreign palates. The variety of tacos can either have Pork Sisig, Crisp Mahi Mahi Fillet or Chicken Inasal. Named after the restaurant, their Manila Life Bacon and Mushroom Burger could be their signature as it is made of mushrooms from a quaint community in Tagaytay. Not to mention its 100% pure beef patty and criss-cut fries on the side.

Filipino dining is not complete with rice and so is Manila Life Café. All-time favorite rice dishes are reminiscent to mom’s cooking such as Porl Adobo, Beef Kaldereta and Sisig Rice. Another highlight is the It Takes Gutz Bam-I inspired by the recipe of beauty queen and actress Ruffa Gutierrez from her hometown in Cebu. It is a noodle dish packed with chicken strips, sliced pork, shrimp, Chinese chorizo, wood ear mushroom and vegetables. It is a mouthful indeed!

Marriott is always a step forward for designing Manila Life as an extension of their hotel with front office services from 11am to 8pm. You may do your check-in or out, settle payments, walk-in room reservation and other concierge services. Guests in a hurry for a flight can go here to settle their rooms, grab a bite and fly out.

Of course every destination is not complete without a souvenir, so they partnered with Filipino designer Jeffrey Rogador for some retail items like sunglasses and stylish bags. Grab-and-go freshly baked bread and cookies that goes best with their mango jam.

Manila Life elevates the Filipino cuisines and hospitality notches higher, keeping everyone coming back, because Marriott believes that there is really no place like Manila.

Manila Life is open daily (Mondays to Sundays) from  7am to 8pm. To know more about Manila Life, call (632) 988-9999 local or visit the hotel’s website (www.manilamarriott.com),Facebook (MarriottManila), Twitter (@marriottmanila), and Instagram (@manilamarriott).
